In this tutorial, we will take the scene that we created in Part 1 (dynamics) and render it with caustics ON. So lets get started:

I finally had the time to create this tutorial about water dynamics and caustics in 3d studio max and vray. I divided this into two parts, part one deals with “reactor” and how to achieve effect of ball dropping into water. Part 2 is all about caustics. Here we go: MORE>>
Another texture baking test using vray renderer inside of 3d studio max 2009. I tried to use gobo-effect lighting, like the use in live performances on stage and stuff or on shows like Jay Leno, so it is not smudged or anything (this is the actual lighting set-up). The only blurry thing is the quality of the baked texture (512×512), but its just a test anyway! Its so cool, when all the textures were baked and I re-applied them to the objects, I could rotate around in viewport and see my scene fully lit (without any lights!). You can see in the thumbnails, those are sceenshots directly from max:
Here is short animation, check out the render time per frame (2 seconds!) instead of 40 seconds!

Today, I tried doing some texture baking in 3d studio max. After I got the rendering of all the sides of my glowing light box, I added the logo in photoshop and reapplied the texture back to the same box. So, it still does look like glass, but in reality it is just a jpg texture with vraylightmtl. MORE>>

Wow!
I was digging through my old scratched CD-R’s, and I found a bunch of my lost college work! Here are some of my first architectural hand illustrations from 2001-2002. It is really special to me, because this is when I realized how much I like doing architectural illustration. I spent countless hours drawing this things, and I loved it!
Screen grabs from modeling and post-production of House in Japan, personal project rendering. This is actual house in Japan, designed by Shigeru Fuse Architect, I saw the photograph in a Japanese Design magazine and decided to match it in 3D.

I was also wondering if you guys watch the new show called “Flashforward”, because many people say that this show tries to appeal to Lost fans. They even had Oceanic Airlines ad in the background in one of the scenes. But today I watched episode 3, it has to do with 137 seconds, which is how long the people blacked out for on entire planet. What is interesting is how they got 137, it is from hebrew word Kaballah, when spelled in hebrew it will add up to 137.
So this kind of made me think, and try to find out what Lost numbers (4,8,15,16,23,42) MORE>>
Today, I did some Mental-Ray tests:
Believe it or not, ever since I started using 3D Studio Max (5 years ago – 3d studio max 4.1 awesome!), I started using it with Scanline and later with Vray plugin. Mental-ray seemed always very complicated to me, and I didn’t bother using it, because MORE>>
Realflow test 002. Simulation time 8 minutes, rendered with 3dstudio/vray (render time ~17min), compositing in AE for depth of field and some color correction.
